Enrollement/GPA Requirements and Retake Policy
Enrollment Requirements.
To be considered a full-time student for financial aid purposes, graduate students must be enrolled in at least 9 hours if they are not on an assistantship appointment, or at least 6 hours in the fall and spring if on an assistantship.
The Graduate School only requires summer enrollment if you begin an assistantship appointment in the summer. If you are on an assistantship appointment in subsequent summers, enrollment will not be required by the Graduate School but may be required by your employing unit.
Graduate students may enroll in a maximum of 12 hours per semester. You will need permission from the Graduate School to enroll in more than 12 hours.
In addition to following the enrollment requirements already described, international graduate students who are studying at a physical K-State campus in Manhattan, Olathe, or Salina, Kansas may enroll in only one online course each semester.
GPA Requirements and Academic Status
At the start of your graduate career, your academic status is stated in your admission letter.
If you were admitted with regular admission status, this means that you had a satisfactory GPA of at least 3.0 in undergraduate studies. Even if you have regular admission status, you might still have deficiency requirements that need to be met, such as completing one or more required courses, which would have been specified in your admission letter.
If your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, you were admitted on probationary status. This means that you must earn a 3.0 after completing 9 credit hours in your graduate program. Then the probation status will be removed and you will be in good academic standing. You will remain in good academic standing as long as you have a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
In subsequent semesters, you will be placed on probation if your GPA drops below 3.0.
Failure to maintain a 3.0 GPA after repeated semesters or to make progress on other degree requirements could result in dismissal.
To be awarded a graduate degree, you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on graduate coursework and coursework included in your program of study.
